Amerikaans acteur, vooral bekend door zijn stil dreigende rollen in griezel- en actiefilms. Door brandwonden getekend gezicht nadat hij in 1967 bij een lsd-trip zichzelf had aangestoken. Opgeleid als method actor door Uta Hagen en Lee Strasberg, maakte zijn filmdebuut tegenover Al Pacino en Gene Hackman in Gouden-Palmwinnaar Scarecrow (Jerry Schatzberg, 1973).
