Amerikaans acteur, voluit Robert Golden Armstrong (roepnaam: Bob). Geboren in Alabama, opgegroeid in North Carolina, student van de Actors Studio in New York. Viel het eerst op in de rol van Big Daddy in de originele Broadway-opvoering van Tennessee Williams’  Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955). Filmdebuut in Garden of Eden (Max Nosseck, 1954). Daarna talloze, vooral kleinere rollen, regelmatig als sheriff , officier of grootgrondbezitter.
