Amerikaans acteur, pseudoniem van Ermes Effron Borgnino. Winnaar van een Oscar voor beste acteur voor de vertolking van de schuchtere Italiaanse slager die een vrouw zoekt in Marty (Delbert Mann, 1955), ook de eerste winnaar van een Gouden Palm in Cannes. Geboren in Connecticut als zoon van Italiaanse immigranten bracht Borgnine een deel van zijn jeugd (1919-24) in Milaan door. Bokser en marineman koos in 1945 voor het acteren en debuteerde in 1949 op Broadway. Zijn eerste filmrol was die van een Chinees in China Corsair (Ray Nazarro, 1951), direct gevolgd door The Whistle at Eaton Falls (Robert Siodmak, 1951). Hij werd aanvankelijk vaak gecast als slechterik, zoals in The Mob (Robert Parrish, 1951), The Stranger Wore a Gun (André De Toth, 1953) of de sadistische sergeant in From Here to Eternity (Fred Zinnemann, 1953).
