Engels acteur. Film was in feite slechts een nevenactiviteit voor de in Oxford opgeleide toneelspeler Davenport. Hij behoorde in 1956 tot de oprichters van de English Stage Company (ESC) at the Royal Court en was voorzitter van de acteursvakbond Equity (1986-92). Maar de nevenactiviteit resulteerde wel in een imposante filmografie, die slechts zelden een hoofdrol vermeldt. Het meest opvallend waren wellicht de politiebrigadier in Peeping Tom (Michael Powell, 1960) en de hertog van Norfolk in A Man for All Seasons (Fred Zinnemann, 1966). Debuut met klein rolletje in Look Back in Anger (Tony Richardson, 1959).
