Amerikaans acteur. Broer van schrijfster Mary McCarthy (The Group) werd vooral bekend door zijn hoofdrol van een arts in de orginele cultklassieker Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Don Siegel, 1956). Aanvankelijk succesvol Broadwayacteur, bijvoorbeeld als Biff Loman in de door Elia Kazan geregisseerde oerversie van Arthur Millers Death of a Salesman. McCarthy debuteerde in Hollywood in de filmversie (Laslo Benedek, 1951) en kreeg daarvoor meteen een Oscarnominatie (beste mannelijke bijrol) en een Golden Globe (grootste belofte).
