Amerikaans art director. Ontving in 2008 een speciale Oscar voor zijn hele oeuvre en is daarmee als 98-jarige nog steeds recordhouder als de oudste ontvanger van een Academy Award ooit. Werd vier keer eerder genomineerd, voor de art direction/set decoration van North by Northwest (Alfred Hitchcock, 1959), Gaily, Gaily (Norman Jewison, 1969), Fiddler on the Roof (Jewison, 1971) en The Shootist (Don Siegel, 1976). Leverde als assistent zijn eerste bijdrage aan The Wolf Man (met Lon Chaney; George Waggner, 1941).
