Amerikaans komisch acteur en regisseur. Werd vooral bekend door zijn rollen in films van Mel Brooks (The Twelve Chairs, 1970; Blazing Saddles, 1974; Silent Movie, 1976; als Caesar in History of the World, Part I, 1981; de stem van Pizza the Hutt in Spaceballs, 1987; Robin Hood: Men in Tights, 1993) en tegenover Burt Reynolds: Silent Movie (Brooks, 1976), The End (Reynolds, 1978), Smokey and the Bandit II (Hal Needham, 1980), The Cannonball Run (Needham, 1981), The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (Colin Higgins, 1982), Cannonball Run II (Needham, 1984) en in de stemmencast van de animatiefilm All Dogs Go to Heaven (Don Bluth, 1989). Televisiekomiek maakte zijn filmdebuut in Diary of a Bachelor <(Sandy Howard, 1964).
