Engels cameraman en regisseur, geboren als John G. J. Gran. Won een Oscar als cameraman van Black Narcissus (Michael Powell en Emeric Pressburger, 1947) en in 2001 voor zijn hele oeuvre, als algemeen erkend grootmeester van de Technicolorbelichting. Oscarnominaties voor het beeld van War and Peace (King Vidor, 1956) en Fanny (Joshua Logan, 1961) en de regie van Sons and Lovers (1960). Zoon van music hall-artiesten speelde als kind in films als My Son, My Son (1918), Billy's Rose (Challis Sanderson, 1922) en Tiptoes (Herbert Wilcox, 1927). Camera-assistent vanaf 1929, debuut als director of photography met Wings of the Morning (Harold D. Schuster, 1937). Hoofdpersoon van de documentaire Persistence of Vision (Craig McCall, 2004). Publiceerde in 1996 zijn autobiografie Magic Hour - A Life in Film. In 2000 benoemd in de Order of the British Empire (OBE). Was in april 2004 eregast bij een aan zijn werk gewijd retrospectief in het Haags Filmhuis.
